Chart queen Rihanna recently opened up in an interview with the U.K.’s The Mail On Sunday, recalling growing up on the island of Barbados, where she began hanging out and drinking at a fairly early age.

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, the singer says she watched her mother struggle to keep the family afloat while her father experimented with drugs and ultimately left. At 14, Rihanna formed a band with two other girls and began hanging out.

“I’d go out and get drunk, but that’s what teenage girls do in Barbados,” the 19-year-old told the tabloid. “The country’s pretty laid-back about the legal age for drinking. But I never went too over the top. I wasn’t exactly in Amy Winehouse mode. I’d seen what alcohol and drugs had done to my dad and I wasn’t going to follow in his footsteps. I knew my limits when I was a kid and I still do.”

Rihanna added that now when she goes out, it’s for the music and dancing.

“I might have a few drinks, but I don’t get tipsy too easily. I don’t ever get to the point where I want to throw up, can’t stand up straight or say things I’m likely to regret in the morning,” she said.

Rihanna is currently ruling the pop charts with the tune “Disturbia” while her “Take A Bow” remains on the urban and urban adult charts.

  1. WTF i cant believe this … I AM A BARBADIAN and a fan of this RIHANNA and that is OH SO NOT TRUE BARBADOS DO have age limit and stuff for drinking and doing crap like that. If SHE felt like doing that stuff like that at a young age well that was HER choice. I am so UPSET AND MORTIFIED at what i just read and i cant believe she said what she did FOR EVERYONE to read or hear ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS NOT TRUE. WE (BAJANS) HAVE our limits as far as the LAW is concern so maybe she was a lil “tipsy” when she was being interview….all i can say again about this is WTF

  2. omg I am so happy dat she said dat she knows her limits and stuff kuz alot of people dont its crazy whats happening in the world nowadays. Idk if what she said about barbados is true or not but I still wanna go there and experience the lovely culture.

  3. What she says is true. I live in Barbados and i’m 26 yrs old. I have NEVER been asked for my ID on any of the bars/clubs here, and i’ve been partying since i was 14. But most people DO exercise self control anyway.
