Rihanna is more than a superstar. She’s the ultimate icon of the digital age. She’s had more Number One singles in 10 years than Madonna has managed in three decades, and she’s now the First Lady of the new free NME.

For the exclusive interview NME travelled to Los Angeles to speak to one of the world’s biggest stars about her long-awaited eighth studio album, as well as her thoughts on Taylor Swift, life in the public eye, working with Kanye West, feminism and the fallout from her ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ video.

Rihanna on stars joining Taylor Swift on stage:

“I don’t think I would. I just don’t think it makes sense. I don’t think our brands are the same: I don’t think they match, I don’t think our audiences are the same. In my mind she’s a role model, I’m not.”

Rihanna on Kanye’s Presidential bid

“People are voting for [Donald] Trump; who wouldn’t vote for Kanye?” She continued, “I’m really, really elated with his speech. His speech was incredible.”

Rihanna told NME that her next full-length still isn’t finished. ”

To me it’s never done until it’s done,” she noted. “Until the final moment.”

That final moment is currently dependent on Kanye.

“We just have to wait to get back in the studio together,” she said. “His schedule and mine are totally opposite right now, but I think this month we’ll be back in the studio.”

Rihanna continued,

“I have so many songs I love—and they’re so different—that it’s hard to actually put them all on the same album.”

The new, free NME magazine launches on Friday September 18 and will be distributed across the UK in more than 500 locations.
