Rihanna is checking into A&E’s Bates Motel fifth and final season, reviving the iconic Marion Crane character from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, previously played by Janet Leigh. As a refresher: Marion checked into the Bates Motel but never checked out after Norman — dressed as his mother, Norma — stabbed her to death in the shower.

Rihanna was at Comic-Con this weekend and made the announcement public via a cell-phone video. “Let me tell you what a bad bitch is about to do,” she says in the video. “I’m about to check into the Bates Motel, very soon.”

“Season 5 is about the ways in which our show does and more specifically does not intersect with the events of Psycho,” showrunner Carlton Cuse told THR after the season finale. “We are going to see a version of Norman that is much closer now to the one in the movie, but the way in which he acts and the events in the story will not be the same as the movie. They will cross paths with some of the events in the movie and lead to an ultimate resolution. What that resolution is and how that plays out is something that will be not disconnected to the movie Psycho but will be very much our own story in the same way the entire series has been.”

For Rihanna, meanwhile, Bates marks her biggest scripted acting role to date. The casting comes after the singer revealed that she was a big fan of the A&E series in a Vanity Fair cover story.

“I read this article in which she said she was a fan of “Bates Motel,” executive producer Carlton Cuse explained. “We asked and she said yes. It was awesome. We’re really excited about it. It really feels very much like the version of the character that is different from the movie.”

Cuse also said that the Marion character is one they wanted to make sure to include before wrapping the A&E series next year. “We wanted her to very much be her own character and we felt in order to do that we needed to find someone who was very, very special to play Marion.” Also on the panel with Cuse were executive producer Kerry Ehrin and stars Vera Farmiga (Norma), Freddie Highmore (Norman), Nestor Carbonell (Alex) and Max Thieriot (Dylan).

“Bates Motel” will begin production this fall in Vancouver and will return for a final season in 2017 on A&E.
