We got an exclusive interview with Rihanna’s makeup artist Karin Darnell. You can read it below!

  • UR: What inspired you for Rihanna’s Loud Tour make up?

Karin: “The Loud tour make up has been inspired by the Loud campaign! It summarises all the different looks we have done over the last year! It started with soft pastel lilacs and greens and soft oranges on the eyes (no hard lines) and beautiful simple lashes.
Last july/August…nobody else had done these colours and they soon became the signature spring summer colours for 2011!! We were very happy with that!
We mixed Ruby woo red lips (by MAC) with these soft pastel eyes too…. an unusual but stunning combination!…another look we see more of now, in magazines and on the street!
These colours have influenced the tour!”

  • UR: Do you like how Rihanna looks without any makeup on?

Karin: “Rihanna is so beautiful with and without make up!
Over the course of the Loud campaign, she has become more natural…especially on the California King Bed video! I think she looks amazing! It was a conscious decision to become softer as the last album was so tough looking!”

  • UR: What is your favourite makeup style that you have ever done on Rihanna?

Karin: “I don’t have a favourite make up style, I have loved everything we were doing at the time we were doing it!
I always love and whole heartedly believe in what we are doing at that given moment!…
However its important to always move forward and find new things!…that is what a creative person does…both Rihanna and I are always moving forward!
Otherwise things get boring!”

  • UR: What is Rihanna like to work with?

Karin: “Rihanna is amazing to work with…she is creative, open minded and not scared to try new things, for that, I love her!!
She is a beautiful person on the inside too…intelligent and an old soul….I am constantly impressed with how she handles the business! Everyone around her too is real and we have so much fun!”

  • UR: What inspired you to do that kind of make up for Rihanna’s LOUD album photo shoot?

Karin: “I didn’t want to do anymore hard and dark looks for the Loud campaign!
The album cover was all about being soft and sexy without trying too hard! The glossy eyes and skin and a red lip is timeless and beautiful! The album cover is powerful and mirrors the red hair too! I love it!”

  • UR: Which has been your favourite hair colour on Rihanna? Red,black or blonde?

Karin: “Again…I don’t have a favourite hair colour…I love the influence any colour makes on the face and make up!
Each colour, as it happens, becomes my new favourite!…conventional or not…I have enjoyed each colour phase…and if it changes again…I will be ready to enjoy it and what it brings to the make up especially!”

  • UR: Does Rihanna contribute to her makeup style?

Karin: “Yes of course!
I always say that Rihanna and I enjoy an amazing make up collaboration! ….if she wasn’t up for change, then she wouldn’t have achieved the numerous iconic looks that she is so well known for !!!
For me, working with Rihanna is exciting!”

  • UR: What is your favourite Rihanna song?

Karin: “Man Down…I loved it from the first moment I heard it!…and I am so pleased with the video, it completely captures the emotion of the song!”

  • UR: If you could rate Rihanna’s styling out of 10, what would it be?

Karin: 10!

  8. Great interview. It’s always nice to see Rihanna with her different looks, and she still looks good each time. I guess it’s the passion that she has for her craft that radiates and makes her shine even more.  Makeup shouldn’t always be something that only gives you color and beauty, but it should also blend with how you are inside – Beautiful. Karin and Rihanna really has great teamwork. Thanks for sharing.
